educational philosophy

I am devoted to developing students’ musicianship by fostering a love of music and an appreciation of excellence. I believe in music for music’s sake and feel that quality music education plays an imperative role in cultivating the aesthetic sense of our youth. In addition, I hope that the lessons learned and memories made while in band help students go on to become life-long learners that are successful in all areas of their adult lives, no matter what their chosen career path.

I embrace the idea of a “band family.”

I believe in a culture of well-roundedness throughout a band program: placing balanced emphasis on the success of concert and marching ensembles; balanced emphasis on solo, chamber, and large group performances.

I believe that competitive success can and should be achieved through a philosophy of placing education first.

As a teacher I strive to never limit my expectations of what students can achieve based on a preconceived potential to learn. Instead, I believe their success is only limited by what I can teach. I place the responsibility and challenge upon myself, as I it is my philosophy that each and every student can learn.

I believe in setting high standards, clear expectations, and ambitious goals. I understand my responsibility to maintain and raise standards, follow through on expectations, and drive progress towards the accomplishment of the program’s goals. I understand my role in the achievement process and am committed to setting students up for success.
