midi visualization project

Computer science and music technology have always been a keen interest of mine since taking a C++ programming course my freshman year of high school.  Over the last couple of years I’ve been working on a way to take midi output from a sequencer, music notation program, or keyboard and display on screen what the music looks like on a percussion keyboard instrument such as the vibraphone.  The first video was shot in 2007 and is the head from the Charlie Parker tune “Donna Lee” as played by the 1992 GRP All-Star Big Band.  The second video was shot in 2011 and is the vibraphone part to my arrangement of John Coltrane’s “Naima” which is used as a block chords exercise for the Glassmen front ensemble.
